Andrea Vaccaro
(Napoli, 1604 - Napoli, 1670)

Saint Catherine of Alexandria

Olio su tela
cm 78x64
The painting depicts a theme addressed several times by Vaccaro during his long career.
In the case in question, the formal elegance of the figure of the Saint, combined with chromatic refinement
in the rendering of the materials, in particular of the dress and the sword, leads to placing the execution in the second half of the fourth decade of the 17th century, a period in which the influence of Cavallino, of Vandickian matrix, had the best results on ours.
The dreamy and subtly sensual look is enhanced by the presence of the turban, which recalls the oriental origins of the Saint and differentiates the present version from the others previously known.
