cerchia di Corrado Giaquinto (Molfetta, 1703 – Napoli, 1766)

Allegory of Africa

oil on canvas
cm 49x65
The painting presented here is undoubtedly related to the Four Continents series, this canvas depicting an Allegory of Africa can be dated for stylistic reasons to around 1745-50, before Giaquinto's trip to Spain in 1753.
Scholar Mario D'Orsi believes that Giaquinto may have painted two different series of The Four Continents. Two other paintings by Giaquinto, almost identical in size to the present work, representing Allegories of Europe and America, are today in the Musรฉe du Nouveau Monde, La Rochelle.
