In a written communication to the owners in 1988, Professor Vincenzo Pacelli attributes the authorship of the work to the Neapolitan painter who placed it during the 1630s. In this phase the painter was greatly influenced by Salvator Rosa, as evidenced by the presence of broken branches and the bright and intense colors with which Spadaro defines the figures. The painting constitutes a different version of the scene of the same subject frescoed by Micco Spadaro for the lunette above the entrance to the Certosa di San Martino, Naples
