Antoni Tàpies (Barcelona, 1923 - 2012) decided to devote himself to art in 1946, becoming essentially a self-taught painter. Early works were influenced by Max Ernst, Paul Klee and Joan Miró, and Eastern philosophy. He soon began to develop a recognizable personal style related to "matière painting", or "Art Informel", a movement focused on the materials of artistic making. This approach has produced a great material richness, with the exploration of the transformative qualities of the same. Tàpies has freely adopted fragments of debris, earth and stone, means that evoke solidity and mass, exhibiting since the fifties in the main museums and galleries of the United States, Europe, Japan and South America.

The very successful work presented here was created by the artist in 1965 and then chosen as a maquette for the realization of a graphic work entitled NOVEL.LA. The work was also chosen for the cover of the artist’s book "NOVEL.LA" of 1965, a volume that presents a selection of documents and texts by Joan Brossa, Catalan poet and artist, combined with a series of lithographs by Antoni Tàpies.
