«I was literally conquered by painting: it is something that gives me space, that opens up knowledge, ideas» (from the interview with Salvo, edited by V. Angiolini for Flash Art Italia, n. 348, March-April 2020)

The oil on canvas presented here, executed in 1979, is very rare for the production of Salvo, because among the first paintings made by the artist. In fact, since 1973, following the change of direction compared to previous research, it happens in Salvo, pseudonym of Salvatore Mangione (Leonforte, 1947 - Turin, 2015), the return to painting, with that style that made it unmistakable in the contemporary art scene. The subject represented here is in fact a very successful snowy landscape with three trees and two street lamps, among the very first of this kind within his artistic production.

Between the end of 1979 and 1980 in particular Salvo painted a series of landscapes with country houses, churches and monuments in which trees of Giotto inspiration and vegetations appear before almost non-existent. The composition of landscapes with simplified shapes and unnatural colors give a feeling of unreality, almost dream. The dense brushstrokes, the solid construction of the shapes and the tactile shadows, while on the one hand they clearly echo the metaphysical style of Giorgio De Chirico and Carlo Carrà, on the other they generate a new, distinctive painting. (from the artist’s biography by the Salvo Archive).
