Ferdinand IV married Maria Carolina of Austria, daughter of the Empress of the Holy Roman Empire Maria Theresa of Habsburg, in 1768. Ferdinand had 18 children with her, and the heir to the throne was Francesco, due to the premature death of the young prince Carlo Tito.
