La Blindarte contemporanea è lieta di annunciare la prima personale italiana di Adam Cvijanovic. L'artista newyorkese si presenta in Italia con una mostra senza tempo, in cui i due grandi ‘portable murals’ed i dipinti, realizzati appositamente per la galleria napoletana, fanno dialogare tra loro due culture lontane per epoche e tradizioni, ma che sembrano avere un destino comune. Sulla scia di una lunga tradizione che confronta la recente esperienza americana con quella dell'antica Roma, l'artista allestisce abilmente una mostra dove le due storie sembrano fondersi in un'unica lunga esperienza ciclica in cui la Roma repubblicana ed imperiale sembra il presupposto necessario per la successiva chance americana.
The twelve Caesars ( i dodici Cesari) sono i dodici dipinti su pannelli dei ritratti in marmo di altrettanti Presidenti degli Stati Uniti d'America, da Roosevelt a Bush II, che l'artista ha realizzato guardando alle antiche sculture romane e traendo spunto dai volumi Le vite dei dodici Cesari di Svetonio scritti nel 120 d.c.. Le sculture nei dipinti appaiono parzialmente rovinate, rotte, crepate, come in genere si presentano oggi i marmi di quell'epoca, mostrando così come la grandezza dell'America della storia recente abbia fatto i conti con una realtà ben più complessa, ed il sentimento di riscatto rispetto all'esperienza più antica si sia poi attenuato nella consapevolezza di un destino comune, trasformando anche le icone della sua potenza in reperti archeologici corrosi dal tempo. A questi ritratti fanno eco i dipinti su mylar dove è ritratta un'immaginaria grande base spaziale, sorta da qualche parte nei deserti della California, e realizzata per inseguire il grande e ambizioso sogno (non soltanto) americano di dominio interstellare, che negli anni ‘50 e ’60 dello scorso secolo sembrava prossimo a realizzarsi. Ma quando l'obiettivo inizia ad essere ben più complesso delle aspettative e l'iniziale entusiasmo si trasforma in disillusione e sfiducia nei confronti del progetto, l'imponente e futuribile stazione aerospaziale viene dismessa, cadendo in uno stato di abbandono. Il grande affresco su carta Tyvek, tecnica che caratterizza il lavoro dell'artista e che consiste nel dipingere con pittura Flashe e latex direttamente a parete su un supporto che permette di trasportare il wall painting una volta realizzato, rappresenta invece un soggetto tipico dell'artista, la città fluttuante, dove l'assenza di gravità in un centro urbano di una tipica cittadina della west coast americana fa ondeggiare nell'aria oggetti domestici o di uso quotidiano. Ispirati agli affreschi rinascimentali, questi dipinti riescono a catturare i sogni e le inquietudini della vita quotidiana dei sobborghi americani in una scena fantascientifica di estasi consumistica. All'intenso movimento di questo lavoro si oppone invece Il Cielo delle Stelle Fisse, l'opera che da il titolo alla mostra e che prende spunto dall'ottavo Canto del Paradiso di Dante, dove l'artista, dipingendo sempre su Tyvek, realizza un altro vasto affresco che mostra un diverso punto di vista. Osservando dal lontano della galassia, quella che tanto desideravamo raggiungere con le nostre navi spaziali alla ricerca di un futuro extraterrestre, la realtà cambia, e se negli altri dipinti le storie si sovrappongono, i destini della società si alternano, e le sorti si ripetono ciclicamente, dall'esterno questi cambiamenti non si percepiscono più, il tempo perde rilevanza, non segna più gli eventi, e la realtà appare sempre uguale a se stessa, fissa ed immutabile.
Adam Cvijanovic è nato nel 1960 a Cambridge nel Massachusetts, Usa, vive e lavora a New York. Tra i protagonisti della recente New Orleans Biennial, Prospect 1, e dell'ultima Liverpool Biennial alla Tate Liverpool ha esposto in numerosi musei e gallerie in America ed in Europa. Tra le esposizioni la personale all'Ucla Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, nel 2005; la mostra con Peter Garfield al Mass MoCA, Massachusetts nel 2007. I suoi lavori sono stati esposti tra l'altro al P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Centre di New York ed inclusi nella mostra Usa Today, curata dalla collezione di Charles Saatchi alla Royal Academy a Londra e allo State Hermitage Museum di St. Pietroburgo, Russia.
