Artista versatile Berend Strik si esprime nell’ambito delle arti visive attraverso diversi mezzi espressivi, tra cui l’architettura, il cinema, i video, la fotografia ed il ricamo. E’ però per quest’ultimo che è maggiormente conosciuto.
La Blindarte contemporanea è lieta di annunciare la seconda personale di Berend Strik dal 24 giugno al 14 ottobre 2010.
Artista versatile Berend Strik si esprime nell’ambito delle arti visive attraverso diversi mezzi espressivi, tra cui l’architettura, il cinema, i video, la fotografia ed il ricamo. E’ però per quest’ultimo che è maggiormente conosciuto.
E’ infatti già dalla fine degli anni Ottanta che Berend Strik inizia a modificare le immagini con il materiale tessile, ricamando e applicando tessuti sulla fotografia.
La fotografia, recuperata o scattata, rappresenta per Strik un momento che non esiste più, che non si può più verificare. Ed è per questo motivo che decide di intervenire su di essa, creando più livelli e nuove realtà che nella fotografia originale non esistono. Il suo obbiettivo è infatti trasformare e rinnovare la raffigurazione tradizionale, riconoscendo al ricamo il ruolo di riempire la realtà con nuovi contenuti. Con la perforazione della fotografia con ago e filo la bidimensionalità dell’immagine è interrotta, l’opera acquista una terza dimensione e diviene tattile.
Molto spesso il punto di partenza del suo lavoro è uno scatto in bianco e nero vivacizzato e ridisegnato con l’intervento di ricami colorati.
Le sue opere variano da rappresentazioni intime, che contengono minimi interventi di ricamo, ad imponenti arazzi intessuti con diversi colori, in cui l’intervento è talmente intenso da coprire quasi completamente l’immagine fotografica.
Inizialmente le immagini erano selezionate dagli album di famiglia, attraverso un intimo processo di recupero dei ricordi; in un secondo momento l’artista inizia invece a scegliere le immagini dalle fotografie che lui stesso scatta e che documentano la gente, le architetture ed i paesaggi in cui si imbatte durante i suoi viaggi.
Se il recupero della memoria gioca un ruolo chiave nell’indagine dell’artista, l’intimità dei legami e delle relazioni con i soggetti rappresentati si arricchisce concettualmente di nuovi significati attraverso il ricucire, l’applicare tessuti, il ricamare le superfici che li raffigurano.
